I remember as a child at Grosvenor School standing with my classmates, proud to be Canadian, wearing my red poppy singing at the top of my lungs "O God I ........in Ages Past" (it was over 50 years ago - do give me a break!). A good Jewish Boy! But those were the days - we blended into the majority society in Canada. Everyone who cared knew I was Jewish. I was a Canadian Jew who was very proud of Canada. I knew who I was and I didn't have to stand apart. We had a very strong identity at home, and we were not worried about being assimilated into the world.
I think it is important that our Country have its traditions and its identity. The War to end all Wars, and the War that followed served to protect who I was and where I was.
It is my honour of the commandments that allows me to live with the greater society. I do not have to live apart to nurture my identity
Have a Great Day
